Counters Implemented in Single Electron Technology

چکیده
Single Electron Tunneling (SET) is an emerging technology which offers greater scaling potential than MOS. The SET technology offers the ability to control the transport of individual electrons. In this paper we investigate the implementation of 7=3 and 7j2 counters in SET technology. Counters are elementary building blocks which can be utilized for the design of larger arithmetic structures, such as multipliers. Given that in Boolean gate design style counters are commonly implemented using full adders, we first present SET implementations of full adders in Boolean gate and threshold gate design style. Second, we compare three design alternatives for 7=3 and 7j2 counters, namely Boolean gate full adder, threshold gate full adder, and pure threshold gate respectively. The best candidate for a 7=3 counter implementation is the pure threshold gate based design, which requires three threshold gates that can be implemented in SET using 15 tunnel junctions and 45 capacitors. Third, we verify the 7=3 counters implemented in threshold gate full adder and pure threshold gate by means of simulation, and present the simulation results obtained. On Computing Addition Related Arithmetic Operations via Controlled Transport of Charge
In this paper we investigate the implementation of basic arithmetic functions, such as addition and multiplication, in Single Electron Tunneling (SET) technology. First, we describe the SET equivalent of two conventional design styles, namely the equivalents of Boolean CMOS and threshold logic gates. Second, we propose a set of building blocks, which can be utilized for a novel design style, na...
متن کاملExploiting Bias in the Hysteresis Bit of 2-bit Saturating Counters in Branch Predictors
The states of the 2-bit counters used in many branch prediction schemes can be divided into “strong” and “weak” states. Instead of the typical saturating counter encoding of the states, the 2-bit counter can be encoded such that the least significant bit directly represents whether the current state is strong or weak. This extra bit provides hysteresis to prevent the counters from switching dir...
متن کاملA Network Device Stores and Updates Statistics Counters. Using an Optimal Counter Management Algorithm Minimizes Required Sram Size and Ensures Correct Line-rate Operation for Many Counters
Packet switches (that is, IP routers and ATM and Ethernet switches) maintain statistics for performance monitoring, network management, security, network tracing, and traffic engineering. Counters usually collect such statistics as the number of arrivals of a specific packet type or they count a particular event, such as when the network drops a packet. A packet’s arrival can lead to the updati...
متن کاملAnalysis of a statistics counter architecture
Packet switches (e.g., IP routers, ATM switches and Ethernet switches) maintain statistics for a variety of reasons: performance monitoring, network management, security, network tracing, and traffic engineering. The statistics are usually collected by counters which might, for example, count the number of arrivals of a specific type of packet, or count particular events, such as when a packet ...
متن کاملSimulation of a Neural Node Using SET Technology
A McCulioch and Pitts neuron implemented in nano-technology is simulated. The neuron is created with SET circuits operating in the single-electron current regime. Therefore the extremely low power properties of the SET devices are fully exploited. This neuron is simulated with a SPICE description model fot a single SET junction.
